Patterns Unit growth statements

In this Unit, the main thing that I think I learned was that sometimes you do use the math that you learned in middle school. As I explained in my cover letter, I do not think very well in simple mathematical terms, because I took Geometry last year and excelled at it. I took this class in sixth grade, and now as I’m taking it again this year, I have realized that most of the world doesn’t actually depend on complicated math, and that sometimes one actually will use the math that they learned in middle school.

This Unit has proven to be fairly valuable to me, as I learned real world applications of math that I never thought I would use, and it taught me to think differently than I did in the last year (apparently the Pythagorean Theorem can only solve most everything). I didn’t necessarily learn anything new, but some concepts from the past were brought up, and I re-learned those. I despite the fact that I had already learned these concepts three years ago, I wasn’t actually very confident in the material. This only occurred through tests and quizzes in the class for some reason, but whenever a test or quiz came around I wouldn’t know what to do, even though I understood it completely in the past. On this most recent test, I was confused on the entire first page, the second page I understood completely, And did pretty well on, but the first page was reminiscent of a POW, which are supposed to take a week. The page took a little thought, but I think I got it in the end.

Speaking of POW’s, lets go more in depth with those. I believe that doing these POW’s was fairly valuable at some points in this unit, because they made us think of what we had to do in more realistic situations, it also taught us (kind of) new content, in a way that still tied into the content we were currently studying. I brought my second POW as well as the most recent POW to show my growth throughout the POWs this unit, because the second POW was the one that I did worst on and I wanted to compare my POW’s

I think one of the most useful things about this unit, in terms of ways to remember the content, was the fact that most of the topics came up over and over again throughout the quarter. Once we would learn the content, we would know, and then we would have to remember it again a few times later in the process. I think that I grew the most in terms of my problem solving skills. This is mostly because I was sick for a good portion of the unit, so when I came back, I barely understood any of the content. To be honest, I still am very confused about some of the content, and as of writing this, I'm expecting myself to do poorly on the test that I will take when I get back from this climbing trip. But as for problem solving, I think that I learned a lot about how to apply the things that I have learned into a problem without super clear instructions. This is probably because, as I said before, I didn’t understand a lot of the content, so I had to figure out how to do assignments based on what I did know.
